Digital Marketing - Study Notes:

What is Snapchat?

Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app that can be used by marketers for effective, ephemeral (lasting only a short time) storytelling and showcasing products through its vertical video format.

Snapchat has a predominantly young user base, with a focus on Generation Z and Millennials.

  • 20.3% of Snapchat users are under 18
  • 38.9% of Snapchat audience is in the 18 to 24 age range

The platform’s interactive and casual nature allows users to engage with friends, influencers, and brands in a more personal and authentic way.

How brands use Snapchat

Brands can leverage Snapchat’s creative tools and features to share behind-the-scenes (BTS) content, exclusive sneak peeks, product demonstrations, and immersive brand experiences using AR lenses or filters.

Snapchat also facilitates influencer collaborations, enabling brands to partner with popular Snapchat influencers to expand their reach and engage with a wider audience. Brands can work with influencers to create sponsored content or take over campaigns that resonate with Snapchat’s user base.

Snapchat accounts

There are three types of Snapchat account:

  • Personal Account: This is a standard Snapchat Account for users to share augmented reality photos, videos, and content with their friends and followers. This account is best suited to average users.
  • Content Creator Account: This is an account that offers more functionality and measurement to users who create a lot of content and have a lot of followers. Creator accounts are mainly used by influencers.
  • Business Account: This is an advertising account used by brands and businesses looking to promote their products and offerings.

Alison Battisby introduces the concept of social video marketing. Alison begins by outlining the benefits of incorporating social video into your marketing campaigns, and provides best practices for doing so. She then teaches you how to set up, customize, promote, and manage both a YouTube channel and a TikTok campaign, and how to use the two platform’s features effectively. The module concludes with Alison discussing two other social video channels - Snapchat and Twitch - and how they too can be used effectively in a social media strategy.
