Career Spotlight with Joe Williams

by Joe Williams

Posted on Nov 20, 2019

“Your job as a digital marketer is to tone down what you think is the hype and try and focus on what you believe is the more practical stuff” Joe Williams

In this third of three interviews with Joe Williams, he talks about his long career and how he learned the SEO business hands-from day one. In 2004 he set up a website when he saw an opportunity where there was a gap in people's knowledge needs: opening hours for local businesses. He quickly discovered he was passionate about SEO and ended up working in an agency to really learn about it.

Cathal and Joe chat about agency life, and the cross-share of information and variety of industries and expertise you are exposed to there.

The highlight of his career has been teaching, not just as one of our experts at DMI. but also through his own UK-based training courses.

So what is Joe's top career tip for someone looking to get into SEO? Think about what your USP is, what’s unique to you and your experience, and make the most of that.

He believes there are still great opportunities in the search area – many in-house people are struggling to find good SEO experts. Like many experts he also proposes we don't lose sight of the so-called 'soft skills', so you can always understand your/your client’s overall business. As an SEO you are part of marketing is about promoting a product, you need to be able to think from a commercial sense, what the client’s needs are.
