[[p]]When pediatricians started warning of the danger to infants of inhaling talc in the 1970s, adults became more crucial to the brand &ndash; accounting for 91% of baby powder use by the mid-2000s.[[/p]]

[[p]]To target these markets, J&amp;J honed pitches to create teen-focused ads that highlighted the product&rsquo;s &ldquo;fresh and natural&rdquo; qualities as well as promotions aimed at older minority and overweight women, according to a [[a href="https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/johnsonandjohnson-marketing/"]]Reuters Investigates article[[/a]].[[/p]]

[[p]]Fast forward to today and J&amp;J is being sued by thousands of women that claim the powder caused ovarian cancer or mesothelioma. Reuters claims that it has seen internal documents that show J&amp;J was aware as early as the 1960s that the powder contained fibrous forms of talc, as well as tremolite and actinolite &ndash; which in fibrous form are classified as asbestos and linked to potentially deadly cancers.[[/p]]

[[p]]Lawsuits are still ongoing and the sale of baby powder containing talc stopped in the UK in 2023. A statement from the company states its baby powder "was compliant with any required regulatory standards, did not contain asbestos, and does not cause cancer," reported the BBC.[[/p]]

[[p]]This major scandal has damaged the reputation of the pharma giant, and it still faces legal challenges related to its baby powder.&nbsp;&nbsp;[[/p]]

[[p]]In the UK the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) came under fire for a campaign in collaboration with well-known brands like Tesco and the car insurance portal, Comparethemarket.[[/p]]

[[p]]Campaign groups lodged a complaint claiming that the marketing is &ldquo;misleading and inaccurate as the ASA&rsquo;s remit does not cover the regulation of ads in some media where mass audiences can see them&rdquo;, reported [[a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2025/sep/08/uk-advertising-watchdog-accused-of-breaking-rules-in-its-own-ad-campaign"]]The Guardian[[/a]].[[/p]]

[[p]]Andrew Simms, a Co-Director of the NWI thinktank and Co-Founder of the campaign group Badvertising, said: [[em]]&ldquo;The ASA wants us to think they will protect the public from all toxic adverts, but they are in fact powerless to prevent multiple ads that misinform from going on show every day in the UK. If a regulator publishes its own misleading ads you have a problem.&rdquo;[[/em]][[/p]]
